Green number plates

Green number plates were first introduced in the UK in 2020, in order to raise awareness of the growing number of zero-emission and electric cars. These number plates help motorists to benefit from local council initiatives such as free entry into zero-emission zones.

But what are they and where can drivers get them? We have everything you need to know.

What are green number plates?

Green number plates were launched by the Department for Transport and can be used on all-electric vehicles.

From 2035, all-electric vehicles will be the only type of vehicle sold in the UK, and the introduction of green number plates is part of a government initiative to promote a zero-emission future.

Rather than being completely green, the number plates have a distinctive green strip, or 'flash', and can bring owners of zero-emission vehicles great benefits.

What are the benefits?

Owning a green number plate helps make a zero-emission vehicle easily identifiable. As a result, it'll be easier to take advantage of local government initiatives such as cheaper parking and free entry into zero-emission zones.

The use of green number plates will also make it easier for local authorities to create new initiatives for electric vehicle owners, so more benefits may well become available in the future.

Plus, the plates are 99% recyclable and more environmentally friendly than traditional acrylic plates.
